The Heraeus Story...

The Heraeus firm goes back to the year 1851. That year, Heraeus was established as Germany’s first platinum metal works. In addition to platinum, other high quality materials such as gold, platinum compounds, special metals, and quartz glass were also produced. The large-scale production and processing of these materials resulted in the development and manufacture of special sensors and instruments.

It was continuously expanded in the 1960s and 70s through the acquisition of several equipment manufacturers in Germany and other countries. Heraeus Instruments GmbH was founded in 1989 and represented the Laboratory Instruments division of Heraeus.

In 1998, Heraeus Instruments merged with the U.S. equipment manufacturer Sorvall and formed Kendro Laboratory Products. The Heraeus Group held about 40 percent of Kendro's shares until 2001, when they were completely sold.

Later in 2005 Thermo Electron Corporation, a division of SPX Corporation, completed its acquisition of Kendro Laboratory Products, and today is one of the world’s largest laboratory equipment manufacturers.
